Your bathroom – Your Wellness room
Unless you already have a great big and luxurious bathroom, you would probably
wish that your bathroom was bigger, more personal and exciting.
Without tearing down walls in order to create more space in your room, you will
here receive ideas of how your bathroom can seem visually bigger and more
charming.
It is true that a small bathroom can be cosy, but it can also appear
claustrophobic and depressing. With few means you can make it exciting, charming
and shiny like a small jewel.
Regardless of what style you choose for your small bathroom, it will remain a
small bathroom. But with a bit of visual trickery with colours and accessories
you can transform it into a cosy enjoyment room where you will feel like
spending time on treating yourself.
Tidy up
Take everything – yes everything, out of draws, cupboards and shelves.
Then
go through it thoroughly, you should only have things left you really need.
Anything unnecessary must go. The point is to let go of all the old and
unnecessary and make room for the new and exciting. Many unnecessary things can
create clutter and make a small room appear messy, cramped and even smaller.
Clean
The next project is also completely free and gives you, after you have tidied
up, a nice clean and light feeling. Remember that a clean bathroom is a lush
bathroom.
Colour choice
In your small bathroom you must be careful with darker colours as they can
make the room seem more cramped and even smaller. - The smaller the bathroom the
brighter the colours.
This goes for walls, towels and other accessories.
You can easily mix colours for your towels and accessories as long as you are
careful not to let the darker, deeper colours dominate.
There is nothing like clutter to make your room seem smaller. That’s why the
first project in making your bathroom seem bigger is a completely free one, and
it will even bring great results.
Just chose to paint one wall and paint the rest white.
Ceiling
If you have a dark ceiling in the bathroom, for instance wood, it’s a good idea
to brighten it up either by using some sort of white paint or stain. If a
ceiling is dark it will seem as though the room is being pushed downwards and so
making it appear smaller.
With a bright ceiling, the room will get a lift and seem bigger and more airy.
Floor
If you have dark tiles on your bathroom floor you can chose to paint them – yes
that can actually be done. With a good clean – prime and the right paint – a
painted bathroom floor can last up till 1-2 years. After this, all you have to
do is to ’sweep’ over with a paint roll which you can do in no time. The same
you can do on your walls if you have dark and old tiles. It’s a good and cheap
way of shining up old tiles if the budget doesn’t allow for a complete
replacement with new ones.
The bathmat you should choice in a light colour, matching your towels and other
accessories. Lots of different colour combinations disturb the eyes and can
easily appear cluttered.
Wall paper
It can also be recommended to use wall paper in your bathroom. You can get
certain wall papers in beautiful patterns and colours which suit a wet room. You
probably shouldn’t decorate the entire room but just settle for one wall or
square, or decorate some canvases with wall paper and use them as wall hangings
or pictures.
Shower curtain
The shower curtain can be a visually large thing in a small bathroom and
you
should therefore also be attentive here on colour choice and material.
Choose a light, plain colour or transparent.
You can find lots of exclusive fabrics for shower curtains.
When you aren’t using the shower curtain, pull it aside so it doesn’t ’cut’ and
lessens the room.

If you have the option it is recommendable to get a glass door in your shower
cubicle. It’s easy to clean and makes the cubicle visible and so makes the room
bigger. Avoid choosing a frosted version of the cubicle door as this visually
closes of the cubicle and also ’cuts’ the room.
Try to avoid using the shower cubicle as storage covered by a curtain.
Replacing a tap
If your small bathroom is now tidy, clean and nicely painted, it might be a
good
idea to throw one last glance at the taps, shower and so on.
A replacement of these can work wonders for your bathroom and is also a good
investment.

You can get armatures in lots of great designs regardless if you want a gold
look or clean steal or something else which fits your new style in the bathroom.
Accessories
With bathroom accessories you can underline a style, create a mood and an
atmosphere that makes you and your guests feel comfortable.
Lights
Good lights also make a small room appear bigger.
Asses what fits into exactly your bathroom and make sure the lamps and spot
lights you chose gives out lots of light.
Don’t shy away from a glamorous chandelier if that is what you want, just
remember to use the style throughout so you don’t get any style confusion.
If you chose a simple design then stick to simple lamps and spot lights in
modern designs.
If you sometimes wish for a muted lighting, a light muter or lots of candles can
create cosiness.
Shampoo & soap
To avoid several coloured plastic tubs for shampoo and soaps, you should choose
some simple plain bottles with a pump in china or steal, or maybe think a bit
about colours when buying crèmes tubs and bottles.
If it all gets a bit too colourful, put shampoo and other showering products
into a box or basket and into a cupboard.
If you do have some beautifully matching products then put them on a shelf.
Only have the products out which are absolutely necessary.
Furniture
If you have room in your bathroom it might be a good idea to chose a piece of
furniture, maybe with draws, a small table or a chair.
This underlines the style you have chosen in your ’new’ bathroom whilst adding
personality and atmosphere.

Mirrors
As most people know mirrors can make a room seem bigger.
It is of course an important thing when trying to make a small room seem
bigger.
You can choose a big mirror above your sink or lots of nice frames with mirrors,
placed in a system and in eye height. Use approx. 6-9 frames.
You can brake with the mirrors by placing pictures in between.
Try several set-ups until you find the nicest result.
If you do not want small mirrors above the sink you can instead try the idea
above the toilet where there is usually some wall space. Try for instance with 3
same sized frames below one another, maybe using the middle one as a picture and
the other two as mirrors.
Art
Why shouldn’t a bathroom deserve a bit of good art?

If you like art on the walls and if it suits the style you have chosen for the
room then, certainly, put up some art on the walls.
Here you can also chose between other types of pictures and motifs.
Family portraits I would probably avoid using in the bathroom.
The walls you can work with in a bathroom are usually right above the towels,
pegs or the toilet.
Remember to chose pictures in appropriate sizes for the room – not too big or
too small.
Pegs
In order to avoid towels on the floor make sure there are plenty of pegs and
towel holders.
It will be an advantage with a peg for each family member. Then everyone has
their own individual towel as well as one for guests.
Other accessories
If
your bathroom is small you must minimize your accessories – chose the most
necessary and only ’must haves’ as effects.
Let pegs, soap dispensers, toilet paper holders, toilet brush and so on be in
the same style and design. Avoid plastic.

Make room for crèmes, toothbrushes and so on in a cupboard. Small baskets,
beautiful boxes and bowls can make a fine solution for brushes, make-up and
similar.
Create a system which fits you and your family. Remember, clutter disturbs the
eye and lessens the room.

If you can make room for a beautiful candlestick or some nice tea light holders,
then it cannot be said often enough – candles create atmosphere and is the icing
on the cake in your ’new’ lovely bathroom.

It can be warm, personal, and stylish, and still show your sense of colour and
style.
The little changes can make a big difference and produce results which will
please you and your family.
It is your bathroom – your wellness room.
Thanks for now – I’ll be looking forward to ’seeing’ you next time. It will be
in ca. three weeks.
