Peaceful rooms - Part one

  • Living – Living Room
    Eating – Kitchen
    Sleeping – Bedroom

In this hectic modern world it is important that the concept of ‘home’ is closely tied to the thought of a place where you can kick back, relax, and revitalize.

Let loose the good energies, a bit of spirituality and a great deal of beautiful and peaceful atmosphere.

With this, I hope to be able to inspire you to swing the magic stick at home and turn the rooms of your home into peaceful personal retreats, where you and your family will be able to unwind.

With a touch of Neo Feng Shui and modern arrangements, I intend to guide you through the home, room by room, and provide you with ideas as to how you can create peaceful rooms in your own home.

Mess: No access

As you have probably already guessed I will begin by emphasizing that mess has no place at all in peaceful rooms.

Mess and good energies are simply not compatible, so, who could be relaxed
in such an inharmonious atmosphere, and who would want to be a part of it?

Consequently, the very first thing you need to do is: deport your mess. Sort out and clean up.

Throw away anything that is unnecessary. Consider letting go of items or clothes that you have not used in over a year. Remember, by getting rid of the old you make room for new things in your life.

Secondly, you should think along the lines of natural materials, soft and soothing color schemes as well as carefully selected furniture and accessories.

These are the basic ingredients you need in order to create peaceful rooms in a modern home filled with activity.

Whether you live in an apartment or in a house, you should go through your rooms and add some of the good energies and a pleasant atmosphere.

• Peace has never felt so good
• Peace has never been so beautiful

Living Room

In order for your living room to express peace, being a room where social activity takes place, you need to surround yourself with materials (preferably natural materials) and colors that make you feel good and at the same time have a soothing and de-stressing effect.

As the living room is one of the more ‘busy’ rooms, it is important to create a
harmonious balance between forms and functions in the room.

What makes a room appear harmonious is mainly the choice of color, furniture, as well as accessories and lighting.

The functions you want the room to have must be taken into account, and this is why it takes planning and attention to details to make a room functional as well as harmonious with a peaceful touch.

The fact that your living room is an active one, demanding space for children, guests, and everyday activities, should not exclude at least some calm and comfortable lounge style in the room.

A ‘chill-out’ area, which allows a moment of peace and quiet, is an important addition to the room.

You could for instance start by appointing a corner of your living room as your ‘chill-out’ area.

You could paint the wall (or just a section) in a pleasant color, and consider using a few lengths of wallpaper.

You could put in a comfortable armchair, perhaps accompanied by a matching foot rest. Or you could choose some oversized floor cushions in combination with complementary and matching smaller ones.

A huge inviting couch in a calm color and preferably made out of natural materials is no doubt the ultimate piece of relax furniture in a living room.

Let nature enter in the shape of natural materials, green plants, and of course beautiful fresh flowers in your favorite colors.

You can also collect stones of different sizes and place them on large platters with lots of pillar candles.

Some beautiful glass bowls filled with water, floating candles, stones, or flower heads create both a good energy and a pleasant atmosphere.

Also, try placing stones of different sizes in your pots for plants, for instance with a long-stemmed plant, an olive tree, or something else.

Little pieces of driftwood, something which you might be lucky to find at the beach during summertime, create a great look when mixed with the stones.

The crackling calming sound of fire also has a soothing effect, and, at the same time, it offers energy and warmth.

Notice the golden wall behind the sofa....Nice isn´t it?

Kitchen

Dining in the company of family and friends is one of the quickest ways to relaxation. It is de-stressing, cozy, and creates a good atmosphere.

The modern dining kitchen or family room, in which food is both prepared and enjoyed, is for the most part a well-functioning room.

This is a place where the family can spend time together before, during, and after the preparation of meals. Aromas spread and whet the appetite, and you are able to speak together during the entire process.

There are no so-called rules of how to make this otherwise active room peaceful.

But the concept of ‘mess: no admission’ is of course beneficial.

This meaning that you minimize the amount of stuff on the kitchen counter, that you get rid of dirty dishes, and that you make sure the kitchen is nice and clean. (This is something to which all family members can contribute ) Fruit and fresh flowers is a must in a kitchen.

The Rustic Style

You can choose the rustic country kitchen style with lots of warmth and fine details with a touch of Shabby Chic.

Try to bring out natural materials in the form of wooden furniture, rustic clinker bricks, granite, or maybe a stone wall.

Emphasize with natural color schemes.

If you wish to add stronger color, you can do so by accessorizing; cups, jars, towels, napkins, flowers, etc.

The Minimalistic Style

If you are more into the minimalistic look, you need to think about shapes and functions. Remember that less is more. In the minimalistic kitchen all drawers
open and close soundlessly, all surfaces are shiny, knifes are always sharp, and anything unnecessary is out of sight.

In order to soften this kitchen style a little, combine the high tech elements with natural materials.

For instance, you could combine the steel and granite surfaces with marble in a natural shade and cherry tree wood. Bright, pleasant colors on walls as well as accessories similarly soften the room and create a peaceful look.

Fresh herbs and plain glass vases with single cut flowers add harmony and atmosphere to the room.

Remember to keep your drawers and cupboards neat and tidy. Knowing that breadcrumbs are piling up in your drawers and that flour dust is all over your cupboards is unnecessarily stressful.

A television in the kitchen is, opposed to many families’ wishes, a bad idea. It is supposed to be a place to share good times, eat and talk, and it is both stressful and annoying if one or more family members are inattentive because of a television program.

Creating a peaceful and harmonious kitchen requires a little undisturbed quality time.

The Bedroom

You spend a great deal of the time in your bedroom and in bed, and both provide the setting for your sleep, dreams, and your general recharge of energy for the following day.

This is why the bedroom needs to be the most peaceful out of all your rooms.

Make sure that your bedroom is as simple as possible. Simplicity does not exclude coziness.

Use very few pieces of furniture, as you want to avoid too many disturbing elements in this room.

Choose some matching bright colors that make you feel good. You can also paint a smaller section at the head end of your bed, or put in it some pleasantly patterned wallpaper.

Naturally, your bed is the single most important piece of furniture in this room. You can place the bed up against a wall; however, it should not be located directly opposite the bedroom door as it lets in too much disturbing energy.

Place the bed so that you can see the door from your position in the bed. Being able to see who enters the room eases the unconscious mind.

Your bedspread is also important as it covers a large flat surface in the room. Choose a color that matches the room; a contrasting shade if you like.

Use this chosen color for pillows and other very simple accessories as well.

Avoid mirrors in your bedroom as far as possible.

If you do want a mirror, make sure that you will not be looking at yourself in it from your position in the bed. This will disturb your unconscious mind which needs complete calmness in this room. On the other hand, putting up a mirror which reflects the sky or an ocean is a great idea.

A television has no place in this room – I’m sorry! It brings with it too many disturbing energies. Instead, have a small CD player hidden somewhere (in a
cabinet for instance), and play some de-stressing music that makes you calm down.

Use this method as a small meditative break at daytime as well - it works wonders.

Apart from the natural sunlight, the lighting needs to be soft and pleasant.

If possible, make sure the bedroom is placed to the East.

Following the sun rise as you are getting out of bed provides you with a natural energy to get up and going.

Peaceful Colors

Choose as bright colors as possible. Dark colors are too intense and too active for peaceful rooms.

Bright colors stimulate the mental senses, and they allow a more mixed choice of furniture as well as the choice of patterns, as these are less dominant than strong colors.

I hope that this newsletter has provided you with inspiration to some ‘peaceful’ ideas for your home.

A bit of Neo Feng Shui was introduced, but I feel that this is a significant ingredient to a peaceful room. At the Interior decorator course you will find a complete section on the exciting Neo Feng Shui.
