Let’s twist!
- The Art of Mixing Something New and Old

Personal style in a home is not something you can buy. You create personal style with your very own ideas and with the furniture and accessories that mean something to you.

How Do They Do It?

Have you ever been in a home where style and ambiance compliment each other perfectly?

Exactly what creates this atmosphere may be hard to put your finger on.

The exact style may also be difficult to identify?

Try taking a closer look at arrangements in such a home. Homes and arrangements you see in a magazine can also exude this certain atmosphere due to an exciting, personal mix of styles.

Mix and Twist

You often find this unique atmosphere in homes with personal style. New and old pieces of furniture and items mixed together. Everywhere you find lots of little twists in styles and style periods.

Mixing, twisting, and putting together new and old things actually does create an awesome look.

Your Personal Touch

You can easily mix new and old things in your home yourself and so make it appear more creative and exciting with a sense of personality – your personality.

Mixing new and old things is fun and you create a very special look in the process; a look which can’t be bought in stores.

Try accentuating antique with modern. Create decorative contrasts with old things or a retro look versus the modern, simple, and minimalistic style.

The results of your small twists will surely surprise you.

How to Get Started?

Start with simple things – small alterations and makeovers.

One way to go is updating old, perhaps antique things by painting and decorating them, so creating effects to make them match the company of a more modern style.

Later on, you might increase the scope of your creative ideas involving new and old things to include the entire home. Mixing new and old things enables you to create visual surprises in each room.

There are no rules – as long as the overall impression is striking and coherent.

No “Noise”, Please!

Another important thing is to avoid clutter. Your results should not appear messy, and that is what will happen if you overreact and mix too much.

If in doubt, take a step back and assess your mixed arrangements.

The visual aspect needs to create a calm, harmonious feel – it should not seem “noisy” and troubling on the eyes. Sometimes you have to feel your way in order to come up with the best result.

  • “Old” doesn’t necessarily mean antique. It just as well includes used second hand items and flea market bargains.

  • New” doesn’t necessarily mean new expensive designer furniture and accessories. ‘New and fancy’ can be found in most home furnishings stores at reasonable prices.

  • Putting together new and old things with various styles is called an eclectic style.

  • Feel your way with contrasts and small twists. For instance, new, shiny floors look great with old exposed stone walls.

  • Sometimes, mixing only a few things from another period in time is enough to bring out the special, personal look.

  • If you want to start out slowly, stick to a few similar colour shades so that things don’t seem to clash.

  • A visual surprise could be a hi-tech lamp placed together with an old painting in a modern frame.

  • A surprising and striking mix of styles could also be antique wall candlesticks with crystal ornaments on a bare wooden wall.
