Outdoor Oasis

Come on outside!

Sun, air and light are all vital to you, so grab the opportunity to spend more time outdoors now that the season has changed and more sunny hours are available to you.

Outdoor spaces are very popular these days and everyone can join in. Many square metres worth of lawn, an atrium or a pool area are not requirements.

Even the smallest of all balconies can be refashioned into a wonderful and pleasant little oasis.

Decorate your outdoor oasis as you decorate your home.

All rooms call for furniture and accessories, and an outdoor oasis is no exception.

Freshen up with new fashionable articles of furniture, or revitalise the old with some paint.

Cushions in the colours of the summer can smarten up the look – especially if they match other elements such as accessories or flowers in pots.

When the furniture is in place, it is time to think about privacy.

Make sure your nook has a wall or a fence at one of its sides as a minimum.

Add hedge as espalier, or plants in large quadrangular pots placed in a row.

If possible, fasten an ordinary, inexpensive sheet or some canvas onto a wall or a tree, secure to a couple of poles in the grass or a drying rack, and pop! you have created a nice little pavilion.

And should the rain start falling: taking it down is easy!

If you merely have a small balcony to deal with, you can create a cosy lounge feeling using colourful flower boxes, large matching floor cushions and a couple of pots.

If your balcony does not provide much privacy, try putting up canvas or another fabric.

There are also many ideal wickerwork solutions which create peace and quiet.

Do not forget the accessories

Remember that the finish is in the details. Accessories and creative ideas truly bring out an atmosphere in your outdoor oasis.

Accessories create charm, style and atmosphere.

If you have a garden, you can position an art sculpture in a flower bed, or perhaps a minimalistic iron sculpture in the centre of the lawn.

You can also place a beautiful Buddha among some flowers if you wish to spread good energy. Make sure that you are able to see your Buddha from the terrace or from the room in the house that you spend most of your time in.

In Spain, where we live the better of the year, the climate entails that the terrace is truly a continuation of the house. Spanish terraces are often decorated with pictures in gorgeous frames (matching the style used on the terrace).

This idea is applicable to many other countries since the frames and the images do not necessarily have to be expensive, but perhaps second hand, which can be replaced every year if they end up weathered after the season.

In Spain, old roof tiles are used as wall decorations on terraces as well as made in to beautiful lamps.

On many terraces you often see rugs on the stone floors, frequently placed in the dining or lounge area.

Try to let these ideas into your terrace or balcony.

If roofed, the possibilities are infinite.

Other decorating ideas for your outdoor oasis:

  • Various bird cages from the timber merchant painted in lovely colours and hanged systematically on fence or wall.

  • Funny old wellingtons rolled down and planted with beautiful flowers (an idea your neighbour probably has not seen before!)

  • Great bottles from olive oil, wine or other used as simple vases and arranged in groups on your garden table.

  • Inexpensive plant pots which you paint and decorate in selected colours (we recommend façade paint)

  • Glue pretty shells or butterflies made of iron or other things onto your plant pots.

  • Choose either matching or contrasting colours for your pots and flowers. A black pot with pink/rosy and yellow flowers is an example of a wonderful combination.

  • Go to a flea market and look for alternatives to the ordinary pots for your plants and flowers. If you wish to spray paint something made of iron, remember to choose the anti-rust spray.

  • Make a corner of your garden into a “planting space”, where you can plant you pots, fiddle with creative ideas and store seeds, soil etc.

  • How about water art? There are quite a lot of gorgeous options within all price ranges. Remember: water creates energy and flow.

  • Use your wall: decorate with hanging pebbles and shells glued onto a rope, or make bundles of flowers or bulbs and hang them on your wall.

Just for fun:

If you like having fun, an old bed end made of iron, positioned at the right place in your garden, can function as a fun idea for your climbing plants.

  • Plant an old bathtub with flowers, or use it for raised beds.

  • Place antique window frames on a wall or a fence.

  • Hang old Chinese plates on the wall of the terrace. Use your imagination! The possibilities are infinite.

Light creates atmosphere:

You must not forget the light. Remember that lights do not only belong inside and in dark periods. Invest in garden lighting that will give you joy all year round.

Place lights in your garden and by your terrace to create focus, which gives a great feel.

If you have a particularly beautiful plant or sculpture, you can place an up-light and make it even more stunning after dark.

Lanterns and small glass bowls for tea lights are beautiful when hung in trees and shrubs visible from the terrace.

On a balcony, fasten a lovely twisted branch (e.g. branch from an apple tree) on the wall, or place some branches in a pot and hang small candles onto them.

Always remember candles on the terrace or balcony.

Once you have created your own cosy outdoor oasis either in your garden, on your terrace or balcony, remember to use it! That you feel comfortable is essential, so that you want to spend as much time in your oasis as possible.

It is a place to enjoy spending time with your family and friends, but also a place to be yourself.

Dress according to the weather, grab a cup of coffee when the home has calmed down, and let your thoughts take a wander while you indulge in the nature.

Relish your private outdoor space – your outdoor oasis.
Enjoy!

I wish you the very best.

Sincerely,

Jane Isabelle
